Guide to Birdwatching in Lake Worth

1. Anhinga

A relative of the cormorant, the anhinga is a bird that you can find in the ponds, swamps, and lakes of South Florida. The bird’s most noteworthy feature is its beak, which is long and resembles a large needle. You can usually find this bird in the water, or out sunning itself. Typically, they sit on a branch and soak up the sun with their wings outstretched.

2. Egret

Egrets are birds that you are likely to come across while birdwatching in Lake Worth. Although many people confuse them with herons, egrets are their own species. You might come across a large egret, or see the smaller cattle egret. Either way, the animal is quite majestic.

3. Pelican

The pelican is a large bird that often bobs around in the ocean. If you’re lucky, you might watch one dive from the sky into they water. They often dive for fish, then catch them in their large bills. Once they resurface, they swallow them.

4. Heron

There are several species of heron in Florida. If you’re looking at water in Lake Worth, you’re likely to find one or two herons. The tall birds often wade in the shallows looking for fish.
